Prevent MacBook from sleeping while downloading a file: A lot of us use our computer for more than just Internet browsing. We use it to render or convert video’s, download/uploading large files, movies and many other things. It can be annoying to just wait for it to finish and move your mouse to keep the mac active and awake until your downloads or render is over.
You can’t really leave your mac settings on “Never” go to sleep because then that’s just draining and over exhausting the machine, especially when it’s night and you want to sleep ! of course you don’t want an alarm just to switch off your mac but at the same time you also want your work to be finished on the mac. So what do you do ??? How to prevent MacBook from sleeping while downloading a file ?

Step 4: Select the time frame
It will keep your mac running for that time period and it will not interrupt any of your downloads or processes, No screensavers and no bullshit. You can keep your mac with all lights gone but the system will run as per the time you have set ?
From the Editors Desk :
Just recently there have been more alternatives in form of application just like caffeine. One can even try Amphetamine which does the work and has some extra features than caffeine but I guess it’s really on what your needs are. Hope you found this helpful ! Is it safe to leave a laptop on overnight?
(14 posts)
I just bought my first laptop and I'm really excited about it! The salesman who sold me it told me that overheating is a problem with laptops, which do not have as efficient heat systems as desktops. He advised me not to leave it on for an extended period of time. I bought a cooling plate, and with the cooling plate on, the CPU temperature seems to stay consistently at around 48 degrees C. Is it really that bad to leave laptops on, or was this just a sales pitch to get me to buy the cooling plate? I'm glad I bought it either way, it does keep the thing nice and cool.
I have left my laptops on 24 hours a day since i got my first one 6 years ago and never had a problem with overheating. The only problem i have had is with the battery, because i leave it plugged in all the time the battery never gets used, so now i have really poor battery life. Mac app store download. Someone did tell me to remove the battery if it is left plugged in, but it was too late for that, damage to battery already done.

You were the victim of a sales pitch but no real harm done. :) When it is on mains I would take the battery out to conserve it's useful life when you need it and the risk of an exploding or igniting battery is very real and you don't want that to happen when you are not there! My niece this very morning told me it's just happened to hers.
Doggod
Don't leave it in AND the laptop switched on unattended for long periods.take it out and run on mains if you must leave it on.

My 2 laptops are on almost 24/7 but both are used on the mains regularly and with the batteries out. On this one, I don't think the battery has had more than 80hrs use in two years. The only downside here is if there is a power glitch whilst working on something so saving work (especially excel!) regularly is paramount.

quick point DON'T TRIP over lead and pull it out of the machine when your in windows,. ( to many to or else 1 time it may not boot or you could loose your unsaved WORK, the worse time is when its UPDATING ! ! ) . like me but i was lucky it
booted pheww! but dont trust to luck, keep it tucked out of the way and the battery by the side of you to remind you its OUT lol
mark.
Another good point Mark, the power lead. Easily done. When doing updates it's always best to put the battery back in. I know this sounds like a pain but it keeps the battery in tiptop condition for when you do need it. Also just look at the price of an original battery replacement. ok, i have just removed the battery from my laptop, i had not even given the fire hazard a thought, i have heard of it happening but never really thought about it. i keep the laptop on the arm of my fabric armchair, scary stuff when you spend a second and think about it. the only problem i have now is the huge hole left where the battery was, any idea if you can get covers/battery blanks? i have tried a search but came up with nothing, acer 5920g, might see if i can remove the cells and put the casing back. it only lasts for the matter of seconds anyway so the battery is of no use as it is.
still releavent to the OP's thread though, if you want to leave a laptop top on overnight and remove the battery the op may be interested. will start a new one tomorrow, just to keep you happy. on the forum i run, it is encouraged to re use and keep everything together, makes searching easier, but i know you love new threads here for some other reason. :)
The reason being that confusion can rain down, when more than one person asks the same question in one thread. Different circumstances may apply.
And to answer the OP. There is no problem in running your laptop 24/7. Keep an eye on the temperatures tho. Especially if you live in a hot, or dusty environment. And it is best to raise it a little, cooling pad is not needed, but wire cake grill cooling tray works great. Very cheap. (or some chicken wire and 3 bits of wood)
There is NO problem if you leave your laptop running at night.
mines been on a couple of years now, i better go check it
